Description
Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (25mm, 4.69 g, 11h). Londinium (London) mint. Radiate and cuirassed bust right / Sol, radiate and nude but for chlamys draped across shoulders, standing facing, head left, raising hand and holding globe; B|E//MLXXI. RIC V 29 var. (bust type). Glossy dark brown patina with some toned trace silvering, obverse die wear. VF. Extremely rare. RIC V citing BM 1929,0404.358 which has a different reverse die in addition to the difference in bust type. This coin with a very well struck reverse. Superior to the BM coin.
